Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is generally caused by over exposing the skin to harmful UV (ultra violet) rays from the sun. There are other causes but this is the main threat when it comes to getting skin cancer in the first place. In general terms there are two main classifications for skin cancer:
1. Melanoma
2. Non-melanoma (such as basal cell and squamous cell cancers)
As with many cancers early detection of skin cancer plays a significant role in both treatment and in the chances of getting a long term cure. So, what should you look out for here?
- Make sure to check your skin generally on a regular basis and look for changes such as new lumps, spots, moles and sores.
- Look out for spots that turn into sore like areas that may bleed and/or crust over but don't heal up.
- Check out existing moles, freckles and/or spots to see if they change in any way. Here you should look out for changes in colour, size and shape. So, look out for signs such as the edges of a mole becoming uneven, the colour changing or the mole getting bigger.
- Look out for spots, moles and freckles that itch or hurt.
If you have any worries here then do consult your doctor. He/she will be able to test you if necessary.
